They have extended into the fields of film, theater, dance, music, opera, visual arts, and even provide classes in these fields. The building provides a renaissance feel to downtown Brooklyn.
This new building was designed by Herts and Tallants’s firm in 1908. “It is a ‘U’ shaped building with an open court in the center of the lot between two theater wings above the first story…. The building has a high base of gray granite with cream colors brick trimmed in terra cotta with some marble detail above.”
The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is home to some of the most progressive artists nationally and internationally. Founded in 1861, the Brooklyn Academy of Music was built as a home to the Philharmonic Society of Brooklyn. The original building, designed by Leopold Eidiltz, contains the theater, a concert hall dressing and chorus rooms and a large kitchen. However after it burned down on November 30,1903, the Brooklyn Academy of Music was relocated to the Fort Greene neighborhood next to downtown Brooklyn.
